I have observed many catlike mannerisms in my CAO. She hunts just like a Lion would on the African Plains. She finds an area of tall grass & lays down very close to the ground. When something comes by she pounces on the object like it was prey. She uses her right paw as a tool to play with objects on the floor. Or to hold down my other dog while they play. And last but not least she knows when she gives the paw she gets a treat. Needless to say she is always putting that paw on my or my husband's lap to get attention or treat. She will even play a game of who can walk more quietly in the house. She places one foot very slowly down & will not make a sound, than all of a sudden she will rush & fly straight up into the air. Besides their catlike behavior, Caos are also very agile, quick & intelligent. They conserve their energy until needed. Then watch out, they are FAST! Jeannine De Palma

Hi Jeannine I have to agree with you there Rocky does the same thing uses his paw a lot and when he walks it reminds me more of a lion then a dog , or when he hunts his head goes done and his whole body goes to the ground and then in a split second he is at full speed towards his prey , he keeps my bunny population in check catched two of them so far my husbands said to me he is never going to catch a bunny they are to quick the next day he catched his first one . My husbands comment was he did not catch that he scared it the death and it fell over and died LOL heidi |

I agree about the cat-like qualities of CAOs and Caucasian Ovcharkas which actually have lion-like eyes. I leaves us all to wonder about evolution, feline and canine and the remote and isolated regions of their ancestors. I've always wondered about the elusive snow lepeords of the Tibetan plateau. But there is a distinct "manual dexterity" about these dogs and the way they love to bat an object like a cat playing with a mouse. My My 16 mo old male will "bat" playfully at our legs as we walk by, like a soccer player trying to steal a ball or trip us. CAOs also love to push up against people like a cat and try to walk right between your legs. More than once I've been put off balance but a gentle but weighty lion-like show of affection. Yes,the cat-walk! They do lumber like the large cats! Maybe it's their self-awareness but they are different in a feline type way. |
